Our striking wild animal masks are carved by the Chané people, inhabitants of Northwestern Argentina's yunga forests on the foothills of the Andes.
The masks are carved in the wood of a native Argentinian tree, the palo borracho, also known as yuchán. Natural pigments are then carefully applied with the help of a fine brush made of agouti fur.
Whether the fierce jaguar, the solitary owl or the weary agouti, the masks represent the local fauna of the yunga forest, a little explored habitat rich in wildlife. They symbolize the deeply rooted relationship between the Chané community and the local environment.
